Adel, the county seat of Dallas County, was founded in 1847. Adel is situated in the Raccoon River valley and is located 13 miles west of the I-80 and I-35 intersection. The population is roughly 3500 and growing. Adel is a great place to call home and offers excellent schools, convenient shopping and a number of thriving churches, civic organizations and youth activities.
The courthouse is the center of the business district and home to several businesses and county offices. Adel’s historic downtown offers gift shops, antique boutiques, coffee shops, restaurants, banks and much more. The town also offers many different restaurants and boasts a new business park on the west side of town.
The ADM school district is consists of Adel, DeSoto (located 7 miles south) and Minburn (located 11 miles north of town). The ADM District currently serves roughly 1,500 students. The Tigers compete in 3A extra curricular activities. (www.adel.k12.ia.us)
The recently rebuilt library has proved to be a great asset to the community. The state of the art facility offers many programs for all age groups. The library is located a couple of blocks off of the square along with City Hall. The library and Adel Partners Chamber of Commerce were pleased to host the Iowa Book Festival during the 2007 summer. Area Events and Attractions
Raccoon River Valley Trail stretches 56 miles and travels through the heart of Adel as well as parts of Greene and Guthrie counties. The trail is expected to extend by 33 miles as a north loop will be added sometime in 2007 or 2008 (www.raccoonrivervalleytrail.org)
First ever Raccoon Valley Wine Festival was held this summer and was host to 12 different wineries. Adel is proud to be home to one of the participants, Penoach Winery & Nursery located just north of town. (www.penoach.com)
Brick Street Classic Car Show held is June and is sure to entertain the old car buff. This annual event features plenty of fun and entertainment for all. Brick Street Muscle is located on just off the square in downtown. (www.brickstreetmuscle.com)
The summer is not complete without the annual Adel Sweet Corn Festival. The Sweet Corn Festival has grown to become one of the Central Iowa’s favorite summer attractions. The event starts with a 5K run/walk through Adel and along many of the historic brick streets. After the road race the streets start to line up with those anticipating the start of the Parade. And of course there is sweet corn, a semi truck full in fact. This is a great family event and filled with many vendors and plenty of good food.
